Delta museum is a tribute to bluesman B.B. King

    by The Associated Press
    Monday October 06, 2008, 9:11 AM

Media and visitors tour the B.B. King Museum and Delta Interpretive Center during a media day Thursday, Sept. 11, 2008 in Indianola, Miss. The museum will be open to the public Saturday, Sept. 13.

Translucent images of long ago, of black men and women, backs bent, picking cotton under an unforgiving sun, are artistically displayed on standing glass panels in a museum carved out of an old brick gin mill in the Mississippi Delta.

They're a reminder of those who labored by day in a segregated society. But at night they escaped to Indianola's Church Street to be entertained by a young man later known as B.B. King, who would throw his hat on the ground to catch coins as he conjured devil's music from his guitar.

The tight economy won't stop New Orleanians from eating out

    by The Times-Picayune
    Friday October 03, 2008, 3:44 PM

Softshell crab and trout meuniere at Galatoire's.

If you are a New Orleanian, eating out is as essential as breathing -- even in tough economic times.

Tell us about the dining experience that will always have a secure place in your budget -- that restaurant whose tables feel like an extension of your own dining room, that special dish that can't be spared, that waiter who feels like part of the family.

We'll publish a sampling in the fall edition of Lagniappe's Dining Guide on Oct. 26.

Violinist Kavafian, LPO bring alive Diego Rivera's murals

by Chris Waddington, Contributing writer, The Times-Picayune
    Saturday October 04, 2008, 4:30 AM

    Chris Waddington, Concert Scene

Great singers make the connection between words and music to create a narrative whole. That's a harder job for instrumentalists, but violin virtuoso Ida Kavafian did just that on Thursday with her blazing, powerful reading of a 2003 concerto by Michael Dougherty -- a work inspired by Diego Rivera's famed murals of industrial might in 1930s Detroit.

With grit -- and phenomenal bow speed -- Kavafian soared and roared above the Louisiana Philharmonic Orchestra, filling the First Baptist Church New Orleans with weird close-to-the-bridge harmonics, vibrato-draped melodies and motoric rhythms as she charged through this clangorous, colorful work.

With the fat part of hurricane season in the rearview mirrror, local film production is starting to ramp up again.

Exhibit A: Local officials are once again sending out reports of anticipated traffic interruptions due to film activity.

Here's a quick rundown, courtesy of the New Orleans Office of Film and Video.

Dome-tailgater or bar-patron? How do you plan to watch the Saints?

    by Keith Marszalek, NOLA.com
    Monday October 06, 2008, 10:34 AM

It's only 11 a.m. and there are already a horde of tail-gators set up around the Dome cooking up burgers and brats like it's nobody's business.

The Saints star in prime-time tonight against the Minnesota Vikings on ESPN in the first of two Monday night appearances this season.

If eating out of the back of a parked truck isn't your thing, area bars like Finn McCool's, Storyville Tavern, Cooter Brown's and countless others should have more than enough vittles to satisfy even the most ravenous of fans.

Where do you plan to watch the game and which bars offer the best Saints' game experience?

Got a great tailgating recipe, post it here »

Have a favorite new season show?

    by Keith Marszalek, NOLA.com
    Monday October 06, 2008, 10:00 AM

Here we sit, a few weeks into the new season, and as I anxiously await today's lunch hour to catch up on last week's episode of "Heroes" before tonight's airs, I'm beginning to wonder what (if any), must-see show's I'm missing.

My summer addiction to "House" hasn't seem to manifest into a new weekly addiction, nor have any of this season's new shows really altered my viewing habits. But there has to be something out there . . . Right?

What gems have you unearthed this season? And which shows do you think won't see Christmas?
